Cartoon for woodcut "Grief in Afghanistan", 2004
Grief in Afghanistan 'cartoon'

pen & ink, 7" x 5"

The cartoon is the 'blueprint' for the final artwork. It is the place where various design issues are worked out before a woodcut or other print is made. For a relief print, like a woodcut, the carved image is reversed in both orientation and tone. The final print will be the reverse left-to-right of the carved plate and those areas that are light in the print are the areas where the plate has been carved away.

It's a neat puzzle if you wrap your mind around it.
